IALD Education Trust Stipend Program



Thank you for your interest in the IALD Education Trust Stipend Program. The IALD Education Trust supports educator and student travel/training in an ongoing effort to ensure the future of the architectural lighting design profession. The IALD Education Trust provides stipends that enable students and educators to attend key industry events, seminars and conferences, such as IALD Enlighten Americas and LIGHTFAIR International. Stipend amounts vary among recipients.

The IALD Education Trust is proud to include theatrical lighting design students in its work; all student members of the United States Institute for Theatrical Technology (USITT) are eligible to apply for all stipends.

Daily seminars, split into three tracks, focus on different aspects of the lighting profession and current issues impacting the lighting industry. The Student portfolio sessions and evening networking dinners allow interaction with IALD members and the potential to discuss post-graduation and internship employment. LightPlay, a design exercise completed by student teams, is an integral part of the experience.

Evening events and other networking breaks allow interaction with IALD members and the potential to discuss post-graduation and internship employment. IALD Enlighten Europe offers an important chance for students to network with a vibrant, varied design community.

This five-day, five-night comprehensive landscape lighting experience, led by Janet Lennox Moyer, FIALD, and featuring a team of more than ten instructors, includes a series of lectures, demonstrations, presentations and a lot of hands-on field work using a variety of major manufacturers' equipment. A student or educator may propose their own lighting-related activity for support consideration. The applicaiton requires these applicants to include a preliminary budget and any other information not covered by the standard application questions.

LIGHTFAIR INTERNATIONAL 2014 | LAS VEGAS NV, USA | 3-5 JUNE 2014

It brings together top international and domestic architectural, design, engineering and lighting professionals and exhibitors from around the world. A stipend for LFI  funds a portion of the recipient's cost of transportation, hotel, registration for the trade show floor and one class. Students may attend the IALD International Lighting Design Awards Presentation on 4 June 2014. For more information about LFI, please visit http://www.lightfair.com.

APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

QUALIFICATION CRITERIA
  1. In order to qualify for an IALD Education Trust stipend, you must be a Student or Educator member of the IALD or have your IALD membership pending. To apply for membership, please visit iald.me/JoinIALD (this URL is case sensitive). For questions or concerns about membership, please email membership@iald.org.
  2. In order to qualify for an IALD Education Trust stipend, you must also be enrolled or teaching in a lighting affiliated program (i.e., lighting design, theatrical lighting, architecture, engineering, interior design) at the time of application and at the time the event for which you are applying will occur.
  3. Educators must instruct on a full-time basis in order to qualify for an IALD Education Trust stipend.
APPLICATION MATERIAL
All application forms and supporting materials must be submitted in English. Please compile one PDF named using the format for the program for which you are applying:

The application should consist of the following materials:
  • Completed application form
  • Resume (1 page LIMIT; no photos or portfolios, please)
  • One letter of recommendation from a lighting-related faculty member or professional (Educator members do not need to submit recommendations)
  • Personal statement about which event you plan to attend, why and how it will help you in your lighting design career (250-word maximum)
  • "Propose Your Own" Stipend Applicants Only: In addition to a personal statement, please include a description of the program for which you are applying, including a link to the program's web site, and a detailed cost breakdown of the program to justify your stipend request
SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Email the final PDF to jill@iald.org. Do not include any material besides the above items with your application. Applications must be received no later than the respective deadline of the stipend for which you are applying.

STIPEND RECIPIENT RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. If you are selected as a stipend recipient, you will receive an email from Jill Mulholland, IALD Education Trust Coordinator, within six weeks of the application deadline.
  2. You are responsible for securing your own travel and hotel arrangements; this means you will carry the costs until after attending the program/project.
  3. Hotel and travel costs that exceed the awarded stipend amount are the sole responsibility of the stipend recipient. To avoid extra expenses, sharing hotel rooms is encouraged; a Facebook group will be opened to facilitate this.
  4. You are responsible for informing your academic instructors and/or academic institution of your absence.
  5. You are responsible for securing any visas or passports that may be necessary. Please check with your local embassy or government office to determine if you need a visa to travel to the country in which the program/project you are attending is taking place.

FIND A LIGHTING PROGRAM : SEARCH HELP

IALD Education Trust’s Find a Lighting Program feature includes four search options:

  • School, Region and Program Type can be searched using the drop-down menus.
  • To search by keyword, type in any word or phrase of interest (example: program’s name, company name, project name, zip code). The search will yield any profiles that include the keyword you’ve used, or will yield no results if your keyword is not found exactly as entered.
